Hi nijuken. Please read volume 1 of the Best Karate series written by the late Masatoshi Nakayama of the JKA. On page 95 he specifically mentions this kata. It is also a favorite of Kanazawa Sensei.

Hyakuhachi Ho is the shotokanized version of Suparenpei practiced by Shitoryu and Gojuryu groups. It comes from Kanazawa, who made changes to stylize the kata for Shotokan body dynamics. Most shotokan groups do not practice this kata in any form.

I do not know this kata but it was done with nice speed and kime. It's not one of the "standard" shotokan" kata, but what the hey...I liked it. BTW, where in Philly was this exam? Was this at McClary's dojo?

Yes. This was filmed at Shihan John McClary's Best Karate in Philadelphia. The dojo was completely destroyed in a fire on January 23rd, 2007.

Thanks "68" for the quick reply. I heard about the fire. I understand John is with Kanazawa's group now. With Kanazawa Sensei coming to the ISKF/JKA summer camp, maybe (?) the seeds of (at least) mutual recognition are being sown? Lets hope so. All the best.

Hi again. He is actually affiliated with Mikio Yahara's KWF group. I did hear about the Kanazawa visit. All the best to you as well.

I love the way he announces the name of the Kata. And his Kiais sound interesting. I've never heard anyone Kiai like that.

If someone changes a kata, this is the way and standards he should keep to!!Compliments!! There are too many quacks out there who change katas without ideas of what it's all about. This is a rare exception!!

This is Kanazawa's adaptation of Goju Ryu's Suparenpai (Pechurin)

Then you need to stick around because you have been taught wrong...

i'm sorry but this is no shotokan, the stands are way to high and the kata is not existing in shotokan. My Opinion
