Description: Nena Kerner with her first band The Stripes. They only had one album and four singles, "Ecstasy" being the most popular although only a minor hit in Germany. Stripes guitarist Rainer Kitzmann discovered Nena in a club in Hagen, and auditioned her for a band he was putting together. She originally caught his eye because he thought she was a talented dancer. When the band came together, their performed their first gig together without a name. Rainer noticed after the gig that all the members of the band were wearing stripes. So they agreed to call the band "The Stripes". After shopping demos around they were signed to CBS and released their first and only album in 1980. After they disbanded in 1981, Nena Kerner and her boyfriend Rolf Brendel, the band's drummer, moved to Berlin and started the band "Nena", which went on to have massive success in Europe and an international hit with their single "99 Luftballons". |
