Gutenberg originally printed 180 copies of the Bible, bound in leather in 2 volumes and sold to rich patrons around Europe. The most expensive Bibles were printed on vellum. The rest of Gutenberg's Bibles were printed on a controversial hemp based paper that many believed would not stand the test of time. There are 3 perfect vellum copies still in existence. Additionally, there are 48 copies of Gutenberg's Bibles that were printed on the hemp paper.
